New Zealand women’s cricket team opener Suzie Bates has been ruled out of action until March after sustaining an injury during a domestic fixture last month.
Bates picked up the injury while fielding in a Hallyburton Johnstone Shield match. Medical scans later confirmed a muscle tear, and the New Zealand batter has been advised to undergo a rehabilitation period of around three months.
Due to the injury, Bates will miss the remainder of Otago’s home domestic season. She has also been ruled out of New Zealand’s upcoming home series against Zimbabwe, which is scheduled to begin in late February. The update was confirmed via an official ICC report.
Despite the setback, the experienced opener remains focused on making a return during New Zealand’s tour of South Africa in March, where the White Ferns are set to play both T20I and ODI matches.
Reacting to the situation, Bates expressed disappointment at missing the domestic summer, particularly the Super Smash tournament. However, she stated that her main goal is to recover fully and be match-ready for international duty later in March.
Bates last represented New Zealand during their final group-stage match against England at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. It was a difficult tournament for her, as she managed 40 runs across five innings. New Zealand finished sixth in the standings, recording just one victory from seven matches.
Several players’ performances stood out in this match. The leading player’s consistent baseline play, combined with strategic net approaches, created scoring opportunities at critical moments. Powerful serves and well-placed returns kept the opponent constantly on alert.
The opponent’s agility, anticipation, and shot variety were equally impressive. Long rallies were met with clever placement, defensive lobs, and sudden attacking shots that turned the tide multiple times. Analysts highlighted that mental composure under pressure, in addition to technical execution, was a decisive factor in the match’s outcome.
With the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 approaching in six months, New Zealand’s next assignment is a three-match ODI and T20I series against Zimbabwe. The series is scheduled to start on February 25 in Hamilton.
